Staying Visible
Making Sure You're Not Forgotten

When you're working away from the office, do you stay in colleagues' minds?  How do you combat the problems of being kept "out of the loop," or feeling like an outsider when you visit the office?

The best antidote to being forgotten is to build your network and keep it active.  Here're things you can do to stay visible:

Make sure you interact with every one of your team members, no matter where they work, once a week, just to "check in" and trade ideas,

Schedule at least one call at a specific time every week with each senior person to whom you're responsible, so you have time to discuss work progress and discuss ideas,

Participate in every meeting you can possibly attend, even if only by phone,

Make sure you're always friendly and cooperative with the boss' secretary or administrative assistant; they act as gatekeepers, and can make sure you get copies of important eMail and other information,

Clip a magazine article that you think one of your co-workers would appreciate, and send it off to them in an envelope, or send an eMail pointing to a website you think they might enjoy,

Notify people in advance when you'll be in the office, and schedule some "face time",

When you go to the office, schedule a lunch with one or more co-workers, so you can spend more time together,

If your team or organization has an extracurricular sports activity, go...even if only to cheer the players on,

Be active in helping plan the office Christmas party, the company picnic, and other celebratory events,

If a large group of your peers also works away from the office, send a single eMail to all once a week telling them what you've been doing, and invite them to do the same.
